Urgent Appeal:
Time and again,
the state of affairs of the Eritrean people has constantly been brought to the
attention of the world community – in that the entire nation has been
un-will-fully subjected to live under the unconstitutional Eritrean dictatorial
regime. Consequently, Eritreans have been fleeing from such a brutal repression
– in-to neighboring countries and beyond.
Of those
refugees, many Eritreans have been languishing in the deserts during their
transition from the Sudan to Libya. For those that have luckily been making it
to Libya, the government of Libya, has been receiving them inhumanely - which
among other things included: detention, torture, deportation, and did in-fact
repeatedly deport hundreds of Eritrean refugees - in the past. Such illegal acts
were perpetrated on our nationals - in contravention of the Geneva Convention
for refugees. In a desperate attempt to escape from such an inhumane treatment,
by the Libyan authorities, thousands of our nationals that have been attempting
to cross the Mediterranean Sea, by an unsafe and over-loaded human trafficking
smaller boats, have been drowning in the high seas.
Likewise, other
Eritrean refugees who took the Sudan – Egypt transition route, have been
languishing in the Egyptian deserts. Worst of all, the Bedouin human smugglers,
have been inhumanely detaining, rapping, and savagely killing Eritrean refugees
in the Sinai deserts. The atrocities being committed on our nationals - by those
Bedouin perpetrators, have been committed with the knowledge of - and the
collaboration from the out-going Egyptian authorities. Contravening the Geneva
Convention for refugees, the same authorities had repeatedly deported Eritrean
refugees - without due regard to their safety and well-beings. As you can see,
all exit avenues have been leading to a sad story of human tragedies!!!!
At present,
there are a large number of Eritrean refugees in Libya (including in Tripoli,
Rabesh Gedima, and Benghazi …etc.). Those Eritrean refugees are caught up in the
middle of the current uprising and frightening crisis unfolding in Libya. The
situation is extremely volatile and rapidly changing. Their lives are put under
a grave danger on each passing risky day. It has become increasing difficult to
find up to-date information from Libya. Nevertheless, According to Human Right
Concern Eritrea, two Eritrean refugees have already been murdered and several
others injured. Others are hiding - underground with no food, water, and medical
supplies (Human Right Concern Eritrea: February 26, 2011).
The real and
imminent current danger faced by our Eritrean nationals in Libya - is very grave
and frightening. Therefore, we are calling upon and serving our urgent appeal
to:
·
All humanitarian organizations, particularly those that do
currently have presence in Libya to help ensure the safety of our nationals,
provide them with the necessary assistance, up to including – in coordination
with other government agencies, arranging ways and means for their safe
evacuations, and
·
All humane and peace loving democratic world governments,
particularly those that do currently have Embassies and nationals in Libya; and
as a result, are on the process of evacuating their citizens, to also extend a
helping hand and ensure that the safe evacuations of our nationals do take place
as part of, or are inclusive with those of their nationals.
Finally, we
wish to conclude by extending our gratitude to all those humanitarian
organizations, and/or governments that are actually involved in providing
assistance on the ground for all those people currently stranded in Libya -
irrespective of the origin of their nationalities.
